We Design Value: A unique commission provided K2A the opportunity to create micro residences for artists in Maui’s Kula Valley.  With strict development regulations, we were able to provide our client their desired number of residences within a floor area and building mass which was severely limited by uncertain local codes and ordinances.  We were able to strategically reduce the size of each living quarter, without compromising comfort and livability, to maximize the economic returns on the development, and allow the project to move forward.

We Value Design: The program of the project necessitated an innovative approach, and a creative take on contemporary, multi-functional housing.  Working within the massing restrictions, the parti developed as a shiny pitched roof volume, intersected by a long and low dark mass.  Within this framework, galvanized metal and burnt wood paneling are used to create a contrast of texture, color, and feel.  The pitched volume folds around the lower mass and is punctured to create balconies and outdoor living spaces, which soften the simple parti, and gives it a human scale.
